About Me

I am a passionate veterinarian with over 22 years experience, 15 of which dedicated to Public Health and Control of Zoonosis as a veterinarian for the City Council of Rio de Janeiro. There, I have mostly worked as a small animal general practitioner at Jorge Vaitsman Municipal Institute of Veterinary of Rio de Janeiro (IJV), a centenary fast-paced service where I personally treat an annual average of 2,200 cats and dogs, promoting humane treatment of animals while maintaining focus on public health and safety through effective clinical management and client education on endemic tropical zoonosis. At IJV, I have also acquired valuable experience in diagnostic imaging with focus on radiology and ultrasound, and oncology & chemotherapy.

Because of my English language proficiency, I worked as an English teacher for a private language school in Rio de Janeiro and have been a freelance translator and interpreter for over 15 and 7 years, respectively.

On top of that, I co-authored a play (O Conselheiro, 2008), had a short story published in a book (Pequenos Milagres e Outras Histórias, Editora Autêntica e PUC Minas, 2007) and kept a popular personal blog <http://vanessaornella.blogspot.com/> from 2005 to 2011, having an average of 1,200 hits a day from all over the world at its peak. People I had never seen before would come to me on the streets and start chatting about my last post or adventures, which was pretty weird and slowly caused me to develop a broader sense of privacy and a little aversion to social media. Which is why, by the way, I don't have a Facebook Account and will only log on Twitter to read breaking news.

Last year, I made the important decision of leaving my family and friends, my job as a vet and my home country to move to Wales and get married to a very lovely Welshman. As a veterinarian who got her degree in Brazil, which is not recognised here, I must sit and pass the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Statutory Exam in order to register and practice in the UK. I plan on doing that in 2022. Till then, I am open for new challenges, especially if they involve caring for animals and people, because in one way or the other I have always been in the business of caring.

As a city veterinarian, I have carried out animal welfare inspections and implemented relevant animal welfare projects, including a pet grooming course and an dog training workshop for the staff of the city shelter, which houses an average of 200 animals. I have mostly worked as a practitioner at Jorge Vaitsman Municipal Institute of Veterinary Medicine (IJV), a well-known centenary fast-paced institute nationally regarded as a reference in the Control of Zoonosis. There, I would see an average of 2,000 patients a year with focus in welfare and Public Health, educating pet owners on preventive measures to keep their pets happy and in good health. I also have trained and supervised a few dozen newly-graduated veterinarians over the years at IJV, coaching them on collaborative team work and compassionate health care. Experience in Oncology/ chemotherapy, radiology and ultrasound imaging. Because this is a governmental position that comes along with a number of benefits, I am entitled to take a 4-year unpaid leave - starting March 2018 - before I decide to terminate my contract. Therefore, I am still officially employed there despite having moved to Wales.
